San Jose, Calif. - The San José State University women's and men's cross country teams continue the 2017 season Saturday morning, September 9, at Fresno's Woodward Park in the Fresno State Invitational.

SJSU's women's team finished in second place at the USF Cross Country Invitational in Golden Gate Park last Saturday, its best team result at the event in more than a decade. Five Spartans finished in the top-20 led by sophomore Jennifer Sandoval's 6th place (21:42.8). It was Sandoval's seventh time, in seven collegiate races, that she was the first Spartan to cross the finish line. Adilene Aldapa, a junior, had her best full-field result, a seventh place finish in 21:49.3. Kai Bohannon, Jeanette Zambrano and Carmen Contreras came home in 15th, 16th and 19th places, respectively.

The Spartans men's team finished in fifth place at the USF Cross Country Invitational. Huruy Zeratsion was the first finisher for San José State in 12th place and a time of 26:16.5. Josue Gonzalez was inside the top-25 with a 26:58.8 and a 24th place finish.

"Last week was a chance for us to get out and see where we are as a team and not necessarily where we are against the competition. It was a chance for our athletes to see where they are training-wise. Overall, we saw some good things."

"For the women, Adi (Adilene Aldapa) made a nice jump closing that gap between she and Jenny (Jennifer Sandoval). Kai (Bohannon) had a good 6k…her first time at that distance."

"For the men, it was as I talked about before the race, we are a work in progress. I was pleased with Huruy (Zeratsion) and the race he had. The younger athletes, including Mario (Perez), did a nice job, moving up. We wanted to use a progressive tempo type run and he did a good job executing his game plan. We were looking to see where we are at in a competitive situation and will formulate our game plan moving forward based on our results."

SJSU last competed at the Fresno State Invitational in 2015, the last time it was contested. The Spartan men finished third out of five teams. The men ran a 6k race and were led across the line by Ben Branagh who's 18:28.3 was good for second place. The women competed at a distance of 4200m, finished fourth out of six teams, and was led by Jennifer Beckingham's 12th place in 14:45.6.

"Last week we wanted them to work themselves into the race and finish strong, and for the most part that is what we did. This week it's a shorter race, we are one more week into the season, and are coming off a pretty hard effort last week, especially with the heat. I want to take the edge off this week and work on packing up a little more, not necessarily fighting the last 800, but just cruising in."

"This will be a more team-orientated effort. For the women, if someone is running 10 seconds slower than they normally would, I'm fine with that. In my eyes, if they are bringing someone else along and helping them with their confidence, that will be success for us. So you can't necessarily look at the finishing times or places to gauge how successful we are."

"On the men's side, I want to keep seeing their fitness improve. From this point last week, they are a little less sore and are acclimating to the volume of work. As with the women, we are not looking for any huge performances. I want them to be under control, running together and just having a solid team effort."
