Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. - In the opening game of a three-game series, the San José State softball team was limited to two hits and the Fresno State Bulldogs used a three-run fifth en route to defeating the Spartans 4-0 on Friday afternoon.

Fresno State (25-15, 8-2 MW) got 11 strikeouts from starter Danielle East (13-7), offsetting six walks in a complete game victory. SJSU starter Madison Aurin (11-9) went 5.0 innings scattered six hits and also gave up six walks, but surrendered all four Bulldogs' runs. Caroline Bowman tossed the final two innings for the Spartans, giving up two hits.

Neither pitcher was totally sharp, but the Fresno State offense did a better job of taking advantage of its opportunities.

Aurin walked the first batter of the game, who later in the inning came around to score on a single to make it 1-0 Fresno State after half an inning.

San José State (25-12, 9-3 MW) got two walks in the bottom of the inning, but in what was a trend through out the game, they struggled hitting with runners on base. SJSU was 1-for-15 with runners on and 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

The Spartans best chance to score one or more runs came in the fourth. Georgia Blair walked to open the inning and was lifted for pinch runner Maricela Matos. Two batters later, Madison Aurin (1-for-3, 2B) laced a double down the right field line. Matos was unable to score leaving San José State with runners on second and third. Desiree Reyes then fouled out and with two outs Rayohna Sagapolu (1-for-2) walked to load the bases. Alyssa Avila ended the inning by striking out and the game went to the fifth with Fresno State up 1-0.

In the fifth the Bulldogs used three hits, two walks and an error to score three runs. The big hit was a one-out double from Vanessa Hernandez which drove in two runs and made it 3-0. Later in the inning, Fresno State got another RBI single to make it 4-0.

The Spartans had runners on in six of the seven innings, left five on in the final three innings and a total of 11 in the game.

The teams resume the series on Saturday at Mission College. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
