Women’s Soccer Suffers First MW Loss On Late Goal To SDSU

SAN JOSE, Calif. – SJSU women's soccer suffered its first loss in Mountain West play in 2018 on Friday, falling to San Diego State 1-0 after a late goal was conceded in the 89th minute.

After nearly 90 full minutes of back and forth scoreless play, the match felt destined for overtime. However, the Aztecs found themselves in prime position to take a late lead in the 89th minute after Spartans' goalkeeper Paige Simoneau came out of the net looking to corral the ball and send it back to the opposite side of the field. SDSU, however, was able to take control of it on the ensuing possession and Taylor Moorehead fired a shot from around 40 yards out that got past Simoneau as she scrambled back to the net for the 1-0 lead that proved to be the game-winner.

The Spartans (3-5-2) did get another chance in the final minute, driving the ball down into the Aztec's box, however Jamilecxth Becerra's desperation shot was saved just before time expired.

With the loss, SJSU drops to 2-1-0 in conference play while the Aztecs improved to 2-0-1.

Prior to the final minute of play, the Spartans had kept SDSU in check offensively, as the Aztecs had attempted just five shots with one coming on goal. SJSU finished the match out-shooting the opposition 17-6 and had four corner kicks to SDSU's 0.

Darriell Franklin once again led all players with five shots taken, while Becerra finished with four.

The Spartans now look to pick themselves back up as they get ready to host New Mexico Sunday at the Spartan Soccer Complex. First kick is set for 1:00 p.m. PT.
