Four Former Spartans Resume Football Careers In XFL

Two former San Jose State football players and two former Spartan assistant coaches continued their professional careers in the newly-formed XFL on the weekend of February 8 and 9.

Defensive lineman Boogie Roberts and linebacker Frank Ginda were on opening weekend rosters for the Los Angeles Wildcats and New York Guardians, respectively.

Ginda (#47), who played for the San Diego Fleet of the Alliance of American Football (AAF) in 2019, was in on two special teams tackles in the Guardians' 23-3 season home-opening win over the Tampa Bay Vipers.

Roberts (#91), a 2019 undrafted free agent signee of the Los Angeles Rams, also was credited with two tackles, both on defense, the Wildcats' 37-17 loss to the Houston Roughnecks.

Former Spartan defensive line coach Jim Jeffcoat has the same responsibilities with the Dallas Renegades, who lost to the St. Louis Battlehawks, 15-9. Jeffcoat was the San Jose State defensive line coach during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

Former San Jose State offensive coordinator Steve Hagen rounds out the Spartan alums to finish opening week in the XFL. Hagen, who was at San Jose State in 1997 and 1998, is the tight ends coach for the Seattle Dragons, a 31-19 loser to the D.C. Defenders.

The XFL is an eight-team league with regular season games on weekends through April 12, playoffs the weekend of April 18 & 19, and its championship game on Sunday, April 26.
