San Jose, Calif.—The San José State women's golf program welcomes Bay Area native Kortnie (Maxoutopoulis) Barrett as an assistant coach for the 2021 season, as announced by Spartan head coach Dana Dormann.
"I look forward to Kortnie bringing her experience as a coach and player at power programs to San José State," said Dormann. She has a proven track record of helping the teams she has coached improve their performance. I look forward to her drive and energy helping us continue to 'Climb the Mountain' and ultimately reach our program's goal of graduating strong, independent women."
Barrett spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Mississippi State where she helped the 2019 team get back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four seasons. She was responsible for all team travel and assisted in recruiting top talent to the school. The school's Golfstat ranking improved from 68 when she started to 22 in the nation this past school year.
Prior to Starkville, Barrett spent one season on the staff at Long Beach State. She helped coach the team to the Big West Conference Championship, UC Irvine Invitational title and the program's first NCAA Regional bid in almost 10 years. The program jumped 41 spots in the Golfstat ranks during the one season she coached the 49ers.
Barrett received her master's degree in public & non-profit administration from Georgia Southern University in 2017 where she spent two years as the graduate assistant coach for their inaugural women's golf program.
Playing as the former Kortnie Maxoutopoulis, she competed for three seasons at TCU after playing at Rutgers her freshman year. While at Rutgers, she was a 2011-12 BIG EAST All-Academic honoree and had seven top-10 finishes including three wins at the Bucknell Invitational, Rutgers Invitational and Lehigh Invitational
Barrett graduated from TCU with a bachelor of science degree in political science with a psychology of leadership emphasis. During her college career, she participated in the 2016 NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar and was a SAAC team representative. She competed in 24 events and earned three top-10 finishes and four top-25 finishes. Her best finish was third place at the 2015 Big XII Championship.
Growing up the Bay Area, Maxoutopoulis Barrett graduated from Foothill High School in 2011 and called Castlewood Country Club her golf home. She ranked 115th nationally in junior golf for the class of 2011 and placed third with partner Tom Kite at the 2010 First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.
"I am thankful for the opportunity to continue my coaching career at San José State University alongside golf legend and personal mentor Dana Dormann. I would not be where I am as a coach or player if it had not been for Dana's encouragement, dating back 20 years when I began my journey as a young junior golfer," stated Barrett.
"As I step into this role as assistant coach, I reflect on the great honor it is to impact women through the platform of golf. I'm eager to get this season started, to connect with our talented players, inspire them beyond their limits towards their full potential and earn those wins on & off the course! Spartan Up!"
Barrett and her husband, Chelso, were married in 2019, and have a yellow Labrador retriever named Tillie.
