Bats Awaken as Spartans Take Game Two Against UNLV

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Shay McDowell had a perfect day at the plate as the bats awakened for San José State softball (15-26, 4-13 MW) in a 7-2 win in game two of this three-game weekend series against UNLV (28-16, 11-7 MW) on Saturday from Spartan Softball Stadium.

The Spartans had a big bottom of the fifth inning putting up six runs on six hits with the big hit of the inning coming from Ashley Rico with her two RBI double to overtake the lead from the Rebels, a lead they would hold on to for the remainder of the game.  

  • McDowell ended her day 3-for-3 with three singles, one RBI and one run scored.
  • McDowell’s RBI today was her fourth RBI over her last two games. 
  • Rico went 1-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored.
  • Rico’s two RBIs sets a new single-game season high for the senior. 
  • Makenzie Hutchinson went 2-for-3 with two singles. 
  • Hutchinson’s two hits ties her single-game season high. 
  • Ahmiya Noriega was 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored.  
  • Reina Zermeno went 1-for-3 with a single and two runs scored. 
  • Zermeno’s two runs scored ties her single-game season high in runs. 
  • Malia Luna went 1-for-2 with a single.
  • Luna tied her single-game season high in hits.  
  • Korie Thomas was 1-for-3 with a single.
  • K. Thomas is now on a three game hitting streak. 
  • Mia Reynolds was strong in relief going 3.0 IP only giving up three hits and no runs allowed. 
  • The Spartans hit .412 with runners on in this game going 7-for-17.

NEXT GAME: The Spartans will conclude their three-game series against UNLV with Senior Day on Sunday, April 28. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. PDT from Spartan Softball Stadium. The game will be broadcast on NBC Sports California Plus.
