Rico and Thomas Lead Spartans in Win Against Utah State

LOGAN, Utah – Ashley Rico and Aubrie Thomas both had multi-hit games to lead San José State softball (16-27, 5-14 MW) in a 10-2 win in five innings in the first game of this final three-game weekend series against Utah State (22-26, 5-15 MW) on Thursday from LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field in Logan, Utah.

The Spartans offense exploded in this game scoring at least one run in every inning they came to the plate. While in the circle, Mia Reynolds pitched one of her best games of the season throwing a complete game against her former team. The 13 hits by the Spartan offense sets a new season high for the team while slashing .533 in this game with runners in scoring position going 8-for-15. Also the Spartans hit .615 as a team with two outs going 8-for-13. 

  • A. Thomas was just a single shy of hitting for the cycle going 3-for-4 with a lead off home run, triple, double, four RBIs and two runs scored.
  • A. Thomas’ four RBIs sets a new single-game season high for the junior.
  • A. Thomas’ home run was her first of the season and third of her career with SJSU. 
  • Rico had a perfect day at the plate going 4-for-4 with three singles, a double and four RBIs.   
  • Rico’s four hits sets a new single-game season high and extends her hit streak to four games.
  • Also Rico’s four RBIs set a new single-game season high for the senior. 
  • Reynolds was strong in her start against her former team throwing a complete game 5 IP with six hits, two runs and six strikeouts.
  • Reynolds’ complete game is her third of the season and seventh for her career.
  • Reynolds’ six strikeouts set a new single-game season high for the junior.
  • Reina Zermeno went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, two runs scored. 
  • Zermeno’s two walks set a new single-game season high for the sophomore. 
  • Haley Reeve was 2-for-4 with double, single, one RBI and two runs scored.
  • Reeve’s two runs scored tied her season high. 
  • Shay McDowell went 1-for-4 with a single and an RBI.
  • McDowell now has five RBIs in her last four games.
  • Ahmiya Noriega went 1-for-3 with a single and a run scored. 
  • Korie Thomas went 1-for-1 with a single, a walk and two runs scored.
  • K. Thomas’ two runs scored tied her single-game season high.
