Cowgirls Battle By Spartans In Laramie

LARAMIE, Wyo. – Unable to climb out of an early deficit on Saturday afternoon, San José State saw its six-game winning streak come to an end at Wyoming.

The Spartans (15-7, 9-2 Mountain West) were solid on both ends of the floor early but the Cowgirls ultimately emerged on top with an 80-45 victory. SJSU finished the day shooting at a 32.7 percent clip from the field and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Forward Cydni Lewis led the Spartans with 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench in this one. Sophomore Ayzhiana Basallo was the other Spartan in double figures, dropping 11 points while dishing out a pair of assists. The point guard has now scored in double figures in all 19 of her appearances against Division I opponents.

Lewis and company trailed 7-2 early on, but head coach Jamie Craighead's team used a mini 7-2 run of its own to even the score at 9-9. It was Lewis who got the burst started with a nice driving layup, and it was Lewis again - this time from three-point range - who pulled the score even.

Back-to-back buckets by Basallo allowed SJSU to pull within 23-19 midway through the second quarter, but the Cowgirls would extend their advantage to 36-21 at the halftime break. Basallo entered the day leading the Mountain West in scoring at 21.2 points per game.

Wyoming would eventually pull away in the second half, leading 53-31 at the end of the third before ultimately earning the 80-45 win. While not the end result the team was looking for, guard Danae Marquez did make a bit of history early in the fourth quarter.

Coming on a Tyra Whitehead jumper, the junior tallied her 311th career assist with 8:41 remaining in the game. The dime moved Marquez into No. 7 on the program's all-time assists list.

San José State will look to bounce back on Saturday, Feb. 8 when it plays host to Nevada. Tip-off for that one is set for 2:00 p.m. inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
