Lewis Scores Career High in Home Opener

SAN JOSÉ, Calif. -
Cydni Lewis scored a career high 24 points and led all scorers in Wednesday night's home opener. San José State lost, 67-58, to Santa Clara in a thriller that went down to the wire in the Provident Credit Union Event Center. The senior finished the night with 24 points, four rebounds and a steal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Santa Clara got out to an early 20-10 after the opening quarter
  • The Spartans cut into the deficit in the second quarter led by efforts from Lewis and senior A'Tyanna Gaulden to trail by just two at halftime
  • Both squads exchanged three balls early in the third - Lewis, Gaulden and Ella Ogier each knocked down a three during the run
  • Ellie Boni found the hands of Ogier for a reverse layup to tie it up at 46 heading into final frame
  • With five minutes remaining, Lana Hollingsworth drew a foul and-one and converted on a 3-point play to put Santa Clara ahead 58-53
  • San José State cut the lead to just two points, 58-56, with 2:35 remaining, but couldn't edge out the Broncos




NOTABLE NUMBERS

  • Lewis had a career high 24 points
  • Deja Ross grabbed a career high seven rebounds
  • Ogier scored in double figures for the third straight game. The junior tallied 10 points, a team high four assists and a steal
  • Gaulden tied a season high 15 points and added two steals
  • SJSU shot over 50% from FG and 3FG range in the second quarter and 50-percent from three in the third quarter
  • The Spartans were bested on the glass, 43-32, and shot just 16.7-percent in the fourth quarter
