SANTA CRUZ, Calif.—Mia Schafer and Chloe Culver went 2-0 Friday on the first day of the WCC Invitational as the San José State beach volleyball split a pair of duals, falling to No. 16 Pepperdine, 4-1, before defeating San Francisco, 5-0.
- Shafer and Culver were the only Spartan pair to win against the Waves. They needed three sets to win 21-16, 19-21, 15-9.
- Cheyenne Rice and Siena Brewster took their opponents to three sets before falling 15-10 in the third set.
- The Spartans then swept the Dons, 5-0, in the afternoon dual.
- Brewster and Rice and Madeline Boerstra and Sarah Smevog swept their matches.
- Shafer and Culver again needed three sets to win 21-11, 19-21, 15-8.
The Spartans advanced to the Silver Bracket and will play Pacific at noon on Saturday, followed by losers dual and winners dual.
