Spartans Drop Series Opener at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Rocco Caballero went a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead the San José State baseball team (20-22, 8-11 MW) in a 25-5 loss to New Mexico (24-17, 11-8 MW) at Santa Ana Star Field on Friday night in the first game of a three game series. The game, which was played in 17-28 mph winds, was concluded after seven innings.

San José State tallied 11 hits overall but could not overcome an early deficit as New Mexico built a 6-0 lead after the first inning and delivered an 11-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach. The Spartans committed five errors and stranded eight runners. 

Win Scott (4-3) took the loss on the mound for SJSU. Tyson Pereria, Wade Mountz and Brady Pavlovsky all made appearances in the game.

  • Jansen’s home run was his second of the season

UP NEXT: The Spartans will rematch New Mexico on Saturday, April 26, for the second game of the three game series. The game can be watched on the Mountain West Network. The game, originally scheduled for 1:05 p.m. PT, has been moved to 11:05 a.m. PT due to forecasted high winds.
