CEFCU Stadium is home to the San Jose State football team. The football team has played its home games in the stadium since 1933. The Spartans won the first football game played in the stadium, 44-6, over San Francisco State on October 7, 1933. The team's 100th win in CEFCU Stadium came on October 21, 1968, as San Jose State defeated New Mexico, 52-14.
CEFCU Stadium currently seats 18,265. Every seat puts the spectator either close or right on top of the action. Two stadium expansions and renovations in the 1980's increased the seating capacity from 18,000 to over 30,000.
The multi-purpose facility is the site of the school's annual commencement ceremonies. Concerts, professional and collegiate soccer, religious convocations, band competitions and high school football games take place at CEFCU Stadium. The 1999 Women's World Cup and the 1999 NCAA Women's College Cup attracted record-setting crowds.
In 2000, the Spartan football team beat a top-10 ranked team at home for the first time when San Jose State upset No. 9 and previously unbeaten TCU, 27-24, on November 4.
The largest attendance at a San Jose State home football game was a 31,681 sellout crowd on August 23, 2003, against Grambling State. The largest crowd to attend any type of event in the stadium was an estimated gathering of 37,000 for a ZZ Top music concert.
In 2011, a 24' x 30' high definition video board was installed in the CEFCU Stadium south endzone. The installation of the board, built by Daktronics, added a vital component to the in-game experience for spectators at CEFCU Stadium. An even larger videoboard is scheduled to be installed in the north endzone in 2020. CEFCU Stadium oversaw a facelift in 2012 with the painting of the entire lower bowl and west facade blue. In addition to the painting, new padded chairs were installed in Spartan Foundation seating sections and the renovation of two suites. Future plans include the north endzone project and the addition of the Spartan Athletics Center on the east side of the stadium.
