Spartan Sports Hall of Fame

Authority

Authority

The Order of Sparta assumes sole responsibility for the San José State University Sports Hall of Fame, including the sponsorship of the annual banquet and creating the procedures and criteria for induction into the Hall of Fame. The Order represents all sports within the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics. Henceforth, no team, or individual associated with Spartan Athletics will be recognized as a member of the San José State University Sports Hall of Fame unless inducted through the criteria and procedures established by the leadership of The Order of Sparta. Order of Sparta members are invited to make nominations for any individual or team for consideration as an inductee into the Hall of Fame.

History

History

For many years, the various sports within the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics inducted members of its teams into the Hall of Fame. Inductions took place on a regular basis through the mid-1960's, but only sporadically thereafter. Selections were generally made immediately following completion of an athlete's eligibility by team coaches, and in some cases, athletic department leadership. Some sports conducted formal ceremonies, while others chose different forms of recognition. Because the process was done on an individual sport basis rather than a department-wide format, the criteria for induction, for the most part, were determined by the leadership involved in that particular sport or sports, and not by an organized group that represented the entire athletic department. A Women's Hall of Fame, which has now been incorporated into the SJSU Sports Hall of Fame, was created in 1980.

A special Hall of Fame Selection Subcommittee was created in the fall of 1998 to accomplish the following:

  • Conduct appropriate research
  • Establish induction criteria and guidelines
  • Create a central file for all hall of fame material, both past and present
  • Recommend to the Order of Sparta Board of Directors those individuals or groups that merit induction consideration.

Jeff Garcia Hall of Champions

The San José State University Athletics Department history has found a new home as former Spartan quarterback, Jeff Garcia, a three-time Pro Bowl selection has made a significant donation to make this dream a reality. The Jeff Garcia Hall of Champions is located in the Koret Athletic Training Center located just north of CEFCU Stadium.

The interactive display features great athletes, great teams, great events and moments in San José State Athletics history. Former Spartan athletes that became famous after graduation, great donors, great coaches and administrators are also on display. Also displayed in the Jeff Garcia Hall of Champions is the San José State Sports Hall of Fame which includes over 300 former players and coaches.

Through the generosity of Jeff Garcia, great athletes and teams of the past, present and future are forever recognized. It reminds us of our proud history and accomplishments and at the same time memorializes a favorite son who grew up in the area, played football and got his degree from San Jose State, and became a NFL player.

The Jeff Garcia Hall of Champions is open on the days of home football games. It opens two hours prior to kickoff, and closes 30 minutes prior to kickoff.
