Becerra’s Late Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer Over Air Force

SAN JOSE, Calif. – SJSU women's soccer defeated Air Force 1-0 on Sunday at Spartan Soccer Field to improve to 2-0 in Mountain West play. Junior forward Jamilecxth Becerra netted the game-winning goal with just three minutes to play in the contest.

Knotted in a scoreless tie in the 84th minute, the Spartans went to the bench to bring back starter Kiara Parker into the game as SJSU began to push into Air Force territory. Kristen Amarikwa got the first crack at the goal off a corner kick, but her shot sailed high. SJSU regained possession, however, after the ball trailed out of bounds, and on the ensuing throw in, Becerra gathered the ball, passed to Parker who quickly spun and got it back to Becerra where she delivered a strike from the top of the box that bounced off the bottom of the crossbar and into the back of the net for the game-winner.  Parker was credited for the assist while Becerra, a junior from Modesto, notched her team-leading third goal on the season.

Becerra's goal was her third in two seasons against the Falcons. She netted a pair in last season's 3-1 win in Colorado Springs.

With the win, SJSU improves to 2-0 in MW play and 3-4-2 overall. Air Force dropped to 1-3-4. The Spartans dominated the shot chart 16-5 and tallied eight corner kicks to the Falcons' 0.

Paige Simoneau picked up yet another shutout as she improved to 3-4-1 on the season. Just two of Air Force's five shots were on-goal, but Simoneau corralled both for another pair of saves. The senior now has four shutouts on the year and 26 saves.

The Spartans will welcome another pair of conference foes to the South Bay next weekend. San Diego State comes to town for a 6:30 p.m. bout on Friday, September 28, and New Mexico will face SJSU at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
