The 2019 San José State women's gymnastics team under new head coach Joanne Bowers opens the season this Sunday, January 6, at the NorCal Classic hosted by Sacramento State at The Nest. The meet begins at 2 p.m.

The Spartans will compete against UC Davis, Stanford and host Sacramento State. This is the eighth consecutive year these four teams have started the season with the NorCal meet.

Bowers begins her first season at the helm of the program, taking over for Wayne Wright who retired in July of 2018. Bowers was named the sixth head coach of the program in August of 2018. She was the head coach at the University of Washing from 2007 to 2016. Her teams competed at NCAA Regionals each of her 10 years with the Huskies and she was the 2007 Pac-12 Coach of the Year.

The back-to-back Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champions return three regional qualifiers from 2018. Taylor Chan is the team's top returning all-arounder and competed on vault and floor at regionals last season. Ellie Pascoe-Long also competed on vault and floor at regionals, while Stephanie Relova represented the Spartans at the regional on beam.

Another new change this season is the format for NCAA postseason action. Now, there will be four regional sites hosting nine teams in three meets from Thursday through Saturday.
