BOISE, Idaho - San Jose State women's soccer came up on the losing end of a defensive battle on Sunday in 1-0 loss to Boise State.
Goalkeeper Zoe Aguirre had a great game in the net with seven saves, including some critical stops in the second half to help the Spartans stay in the contest. In the 76th minute with the score deadlocked at 0-0, she lined up to take on Boise State's Morgan Stone on a penalty kick attempt and made a terrific diving effort to get the stop. Unfortunately, the ball bounced around off the rebound allowing Macie Nelson to net the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal.
What had already been a physical game turned up a notch after the late score as Stone and Karlee Pottorff were forced from the contest with red cards on back-to-back possessions, forcing both teams to play with 10 players the rest of the game. The Spartans came incredibly close to tying the game inside the 81st minute as Sabrina Weinman delivered a dime into the box for Cynthia Flores. Flores went for a bicycle kick and made contact, but just not enough to find its way past the Bronco Keeper.
San Jose State finished with three shot attempts while Boise State posted 19 attempts, eight on-goal. The Broncos attempted four corner attempts to Spartans' two.
With the loss, SJSU drops to 0-4-1 as they hit the midway point on the abbreviated season. They will have another weekend of road games beginning on Friday against UNLV at 7:00 p.m. PT before hosting two more matches the following weekend.
