The Provident Credit Union Event Center, located in the heart of the San Jose State University campus on the corner of Seventh and San Carlos Streets, is the home of the San Jose State men's and women's basketball teams and gymnastics team.
The $36-million facility, created by SJSU students and developed by the Student Union Board of Directors, was financed by student fees and facility usage. Provident Credit Union signed on as naming rights sponsor in 2019 with $8.1 million deal over 20 years. Funds from the annual payments will be used to make improvements, upgrades, renovations and for ongoing maintenance of the facility.
Groundbreaking occurred on October 1, 1986. Originally The Recreation and Event Center, The Event Center opened in May 1989. The first intercollegiate athletic event played in The Event Center were the season openers for both basketball teams, Friday, November 24, 1989, as the women played Utah, and the men faced South Alabama.
The Provident Credit Union Event Center can seat 5,000 for athletic events and over 6,000 for concerts. The center has played host to national entertainment acts such as Eric Clapton, George Lopez, Conan O'Brien, the WWE and Pearl Jam.
