Tempe, Ariz.-----Tailback Ryan Torain rushed for three first-half touchdowns leading Arizona State to a 45-3 win over San Jose State in the football season opener for both teams.
Torain finished the game with 123 yards rushing on 17 carries against the Spartans (0-1). He scored on runs of 1, 13 and 3 yards giving the Sun Devils (1-0) a 31-3 halftime lead.
San Jose State's first score of the season came on a 28-yard Jared Strubeck field goal with 3:47 in the first quarter. The drive started following safety Jonathan Harris’ fumble recovery. Linebacker Matt Castelo forced the fumble on tight end Ryan Miller’s reception.
Besides Strubeck's field goal, punter Waylon Prather had an effective season opener averaging 45.5 yards on eight punts. He had a 62 yard punt and landed two of his boots inside the 20-yard line.
The Spartans played nearly all of the 70 traveling members of the traveling party including 13 freshmen who saw action for the first time at the major college level.
San Jose State returns to action on September 8 when the Spartans travel to Kansas State for the second of four straight road games to open the season.
