Football Closes Season 55-20 Loss At Louisiana Tech

Ruston, La.-----San Jose State started its 2009 season finale fast recovering a fumble on Louisiana Tech's first possession and scored the first two times it had the ball, but the Bulldogs took over with a 31-point second-quarter for a 55-20 win.

Marquis Avery and Jalal Beauchman caught touchdown passes of 16 and 2 yards, respectively, from starting quarterback Kyle Reed in the first quarter for a 14-7 lead. The Spartans' offense was efficient and effective with Reed completing all 12 of his first-quarter passes.

Louisiana Tech running back Daniel Porter ignited the Bulldogs' attack with three first-half touchdown runs. His runs of 8 and 39 in the first quarter kept Louisiana Tech (4-8, 3-5 WAC) even with San Jose State and were part of a 28-carry, 199-yard effort setting a school record for career rushing. The Bulldogs' rush to the end zone included a 55-yard interception return by cornerback Deon Young when a Reed pass went off the hands of tight end Ryan Otten, a 38-yard pass play from Ross Jenkins to Lyle Fitte and a 3-yard run by Porter.

Reed gave way to Jordan La Secla late in the second quarter. The Spartan starter finished his final game completing 13-of-19 with an interception for 102 yards and two scores.

La Secla got San Jose State (2-10, 1-7 WAC) on the scoreboard to start the second half when he and Avery connected on 80-yard touchdown, the Spartans' longest play of the season, with 8:51 left in the third quarter. La Secla was 10-of-20 for 180 and had one pass intercepted by safety Tank Calais that was returned 96 yards for a touchdown after a fumble recovery by defensive tackle Kalvin Cressel.

The four turnovers in the game all resulted in touchdowns with Louisiana Tech scoring three times and San Jose State reaching the end zone on Avery's first touchdown catch.

Despite the one-sided score, San Jose State had more than 10 minutes of extra possession time, but the Bulldogs compensated with the two interception returns for touchdowns and five scoring drives under two minutes. Louisiana Tech also outgained the Spartans, 424-327.
