Annapolis, Md.-----Austin Lopez tied a San Jose State single-game record with four field goals and the Spartans recorded their first shutout since 2003 in a 12-0 non-conference win over Navy.
The San Jose State (4-1) win was its fourth in a row and concluded the first September in school history with four victories.
Lopez, a freshman from Euless, Texas, converted field goals of 29, 19, 32 and 43 yards to go 9-for-9 in his first five games at the major college level. His 43-yarder with 7:46 remaining in the game matched his season long.
The Spartan defense yielded just 144 yards to Navy (1-3) for their first shutout in 111 games. The Midshipmen gained their fewest yards in a game since a 2002 loss to Connecticut when Navy gained just 82 yards.
San Jose State took the ball away twice, once on a first quarterback fumble by Navy quarterback Trey Miller and the second on a Damon Ogburn third-quarter interception, and recorded five quarterback sacks.
San Jose State clearly controlled the ball throughout the game. Navy had just two drives of 10 or more plays, the first on the opening drive of the game resulting in a fumble recovery by redshirt freshman Josh Fasavalu on the Spartans' 9-yard line. The second was an 11-play possession that stalled at the San Jose State 30-yard line after Lopez's final field goal.
Quarterback David Fales relied on heavily on a short passing game and completed 29-of-34 passes with an interception for 276 yards. Wide receiver Kyle Nunn and tight end Ryan Otten each caught eight passes in the win.
Three times, San Jose State took the ball inside the Navy 20-yard and settled for a Lopez field goal. His first came with 10:48 left in the second quarter. The second came on the Spartans' first drive of the second half when San Jose State stalled at the Navy 2-yard line. Lopez's 19-yarder made it 6-0.
Ogburn's interception initiated a 10-play, 58-yard drive and ended with Lopez's 32-yard kick giving San Jose State a two-possession score lead at 9-0.
After stopping Navy on 4th down at the Midshipmen's 45-yard line, San Jose State gained one first down before Lopez became the second Spartan in school history to finish with four field goals in a game with 7:46 left in the game.
San Jose State will have a week off before returning to action and the start of Western Athletic Conference play when it hosts Utah State on October 13 in Spartan Stadium.
