San Jose, Calif. - San Jose State gave up runs in each of the first three innings on the way to a 9-2 loss to UC Davis on Monday night at Municipal Stadium.
The Spartans (7-18) faced a 7-0 deficit after the Aggies (9-12) put down five runs in the top of the third inning on just two hits.
With two outs and a runner on first, Spartan starter Daniel Chavez gave up four free bases in a row with three hit batsmen and a bases-loaded walk making it 4-0. The next Aggie hitter, John Williams, hit a bases-clearing 3-RBI double to left field extending UC Davis' lead to 7-0.
"I don't think we showed up ready to play," said SJSU head coach Dave Nakama. "This was a good test of our maturity coming off a tough weekend and then playing again on Monday. We just didn't show up, and it's too bad."
Two more Aggie runs came in with two outs in the sixth inning to make the score 9-1. Seven of the nine runs for UC Davis came with two outs.
Chavez falls to 1-2 on the season with the loss while Harry Stanwyck got the win for the Aggies improving to 3-2.
The Spartans pushed a run across in the fifth when Dane Lund singled up the middle bringing home Nick Schulz who doubled earlier in the inning. The second run came on Matt Carroll's RBI-double off the wall in right field that scored Michael Gerlach.
The loss to UC Davis marks the end of a nine-game home stand for San Jose State which the team was 3-6. Now they head on the road to face Western Athletic Conference opponent UTSA in San Antonio, Texas on March 28-30.
