Ruston, La. – The San Jose State University softball team split a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) doubleheader at Louisiana Tech on Saturday, taking the first game, 4-2, but falling, 6-5, in the second game.
The Spartans won its fourth-consecutive conference series after a 12-0 victory yesterday, marking the first time in program history four three-game conference series have been won in a single season.
“We scored enough runs to win the series and it was a good weekend,” said Head Coach Peter Turner. “Our hitters had good approaches.”
Markesha Collins led San Jose State (31-14, 9-3 WAC) at the plate for the weekend, going 3-for-4 with seven runs scored, six walks and two RBI. Her three hits were all extra-base hits with a double, a triple and a homerun.
The first game was tied at 2-2 going in to the seventh inning. Jessica Garcia, the Spartans’ seventh batter of the inning, singled in Markesha Collins and Devin Caldwell for the two-run lead, and the game’s final 4-2 score.
Amanda Pridmore improved her record to 19-9 in the complete-game win. She struck out eight batters and allowed five hits. Melanie Goff (2-3) and Michelle Jones scattered a combined six hits and walked the Spartans a season-high nine times.
Timely hitting by the Lady Techsters (21-19, 6-6 WAC) led them to victory in the second game. With runners on second and third, Erin Kipp bombed a three-run homerun for the 3-0 lead in the third.
San Jose State mounted a comeback in the fifth inning. Two-RBI singles for Michelle Cox and Jessica Garcia and Annica Wolfe drove the fifth run with a single to make the score 5-3.
Back-to-back lead-off doubles brought LA Tech within one, and with the bases loaded, a two-run single gave the Lady Techsters the lead for good at 6-5 lead.
Starting pitcher Madison Fish allowed three runs on four hits in three innings of work. Allison Lang (5-3) suffered the loss for the Spartans, scattering four hits and allowing three runs in 1.2 innings of relief. Amanda Pridmore spent 1.1 innings in the circle, allowing one hit with a strikeout.
