Ottawa, Ontario - Rae Lekness, the leading scorer on the 2013 San José State University women's water polo team, and Cara Robinson, who signed a National Letter-of-Intent with the University a month ago, are two of the 13 players named to the Canadian national team competing in this year's World University Games.
Lekness, now a sophomore from Calgary, Alberta, is in her third year representing Canada in international competition. In 2011, she was a member of the Canadian team that finished fifth at the World Junior Championships in Trieste, Italy. In 2012 she played for the Canadian 18-and-under team at the World Youth Championships in Perth, Australia.
In her first season at San Jose State, Lekness scored 54 goals. She was an honorable mention All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation choice and named to the conference's All-Newcomer team.
Robinson, also from Calgary, is in her second season of international competition. She and Lekness were teammates on the 2012 World Youth Championships.
The World University Games women's water polo tournament is an eight-team competition in Kazan, Russia (population approximately 1.4 million) beginning July 6 through July 16. The teams are divided into two pools of four. Canada faces Italy (July 6), Russia (July 8) and Japan (July 10). The United States, Australia, France and Hungary are in Pool B. Quarterfinals, semifinals and the championship match are July 12, 14 and 16, respectively.
