San Jose State University football kickoff return specialist Tyler Ervin, punter Harrison Waid and placekicker Austin Lopez were named to the 2013 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Special Teams Watch List.
Ervin, a junior-to-be from Colton, Calif., is the Spartans' career record holder for kickoff returns resulting in touchdowns. In 2012, he tied the university's single-season record with touchdown returns at San Diego State and at UTSA. He is among the top-10 nationally heading into the 2013 season with three career touchdowns on kickoff returns.
Waid, a fifth-year senior from Sunnyvale, Calif., is the Spartans' career leader in punting average with a 43.0 figure. He enters the 2013 fourth among returning punters in average yards per punt. Waid is the only punter in university history to average at least 42.0 yards per punt in three different seasons.
Lopez, a sophomore-to-be from Euless, Texas, set a San Jose State single-season kick scoring record in 2012 with 105 points. The 2012 Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America converted all 17 of his field goal tries and was one of two kickers to make 100 percent of his attempts last season.
"All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams," says CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith.
Seven Spartans are listed on the CFPA's Watch Lists for 2013. Quarterback David Fales, wide receiver Noel Grigsby, cornerback Bené Benwikere and linebacker Keith Smith were named earlier in the summer.
