College Station, Texas-----For the second year in a row, the San Jose State University athletics program was named one of the top-10 most economically efficient among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in the NCAA by the Texas A&M University’s Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics (LSIA).
In its 2013 study focusing on economically efficient athletics departments, San Jose State was rated ninth among the 124 FBS members.
LSIA’s study measured the use of fiscal resources leading to championship victories. Schools that expended less money winning either a conference or national championship earned higher scores than institutions that spent more. In 2012-13, San Jose State won the Military Bowl in football and Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championships in women’s swimming and diving, softball, and women’s tennis.
San Jose State was the most economically efficient FBS institution in the WAC and the Bay Area. The Spartans and Kent State are the only two schools with top-10 rankings in 2012 and 2013. San Jose State was #5 in 2012.
Colorado was named the #1-economically efficient athletics program for 2013. Oregon, San Diego State, West Virginia and Southern California rounded out the top-five.
Since beginning its research of NCAA Division I athletics in 2003, Texas A&M’s LSIA honored San Jose State in 2007 for employee diversity, one of 12 NCAA Division I programs for overall diversity in 2008 and one of the top-30 most economically efficient FBS programs in 2010.
