Volos, Greece----- Three San Jose State University women's water polo players representing Canada and Spain scored goals in first-day action at the 10th FINA World Women's Junior Championships.
Incoming freshman Clara Espar scored three times for Spain in an 18-8 victory over Canada in the opening match of the week-long championship that runs through Sunday, August 25. Espar was one of three Spaniards to score at least three times. Her third-quarter natural three-goal hat trick gave Spain a dominant 15-6 advantage.
Sophomore Rae Lekness, a 2013 honorable mention All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation selection, and incoming freshman Cara Robinson each scored once for Canada.
Both Spain and Canada are in Group 1 of the 15-team championship. Preliminary round play continues through Wednesday, August 21. The championship match takes place Sunday, August 25.
