San Diego, Calif. - Lupita Estrada scored her first collegiate goal against the Toreros at the University of San Diego Tournament, but the San Jose State University women's soccer team dropped their 2013 season opener, 5-1, on Friday, August 23.
"We knocked the ball around well and created good attacks," San Jose State Head Coach Jeff Leightman said. "But San Diego punished us when we made mistakes."
The Toreros' (1-0) offense got off to a quick start with the match's first goal in the eighth minute. Sydney Dooley slipped the ball past freshman Sarah Peplinski on a breakaway for her first tally of the year.
Lupita Estrada answered back for the Spartans (0-1) at the 20-minute mark. Kareli Rodriguez drove the ball to a wide-open Estrada sitting at Michelle Kraft's far post to tie the score at 1-1.
San Jose State had trouble containing San Diego's aggressive offense, however, and went into the second half trailing by two goals. Jacquelin Altschuld knocked in a pair of goals off of corner kicks with six minutes remaining in the half to give the Toreros a 3-1 lead.
Emily Dillon gave the Toreros a three-goal lead at 55:13, and Dooley added her second goal of the game in the 67 minute for the final 5-1 score in San Diego's favor.
The Spartans got off four shots, as compared to the Toreros' 14.
Peplinski saw 58 minutes of action, starting her first collegiate match. She made two saves and allowed four goals. Sophomore Zoe Makrigiannis appeared in the match's final 31 minutes, allowing one goal.
"We are happy that we proved in stretches that we can play with a top program and score great goals," said Leightman. "The reason we like to play high-quality opponents is to find out where we are as a team and we will learn from the mistakes that we made as a team tonight."
The Spartans face UC Riverside in their final game of the University of San Diego Tournament on Sunday, August 25, at 11:00 a.m.
