San Diego, Calif. - Lupita Estrada scored her second goal in as many collegiate games, but the San Jose State University women's soccer team lost, 2-1, in overtime to UC Riverside at University of San Diego Tournament on Sunday, August 25.

The Spartans close out their season-opening tournament with an 0-2 record.

"We played well in the first half and were camped out in their end, moving the ball well," said Head Coach Jeff Leightman. "But in the second half, we didn't come out with intensity and the Highlanders were able to change the momentum of the game."

Lupita Estrada opened scoring for the Spartans (0-2) at 21:35 for her second goal in her second game as a Spartan. McColl Matthews recorded her first career assist on the goal.

Said Leightman, "McColl (Matthews) moved quickly and beat a defender, then served the ball to Lupita (Estrada), and she was able to put in a really nice goal."

The Highlanders' (1-1) Tatum Lockett tied the game at 1-1 in the 40 minute.

The teams entered overtime with eight shots apiece. After Estrada took her second shot of the game, Lockett netted her second goal of the game 56 seconds into overtime to give the Highlanders the 2-1 victory.

"Kareli (Rodriguez) served the ball to a wide-open Lupita Estrada and we all thought the ball was going in," Leightman said. "But their goalkeeper made an amazing save."

Starter Sarah Peplinski made three saves for the Spartans, one fewer than Highlander Elizabeth Silas' four.

San José State heads north to face the University of San Francisco on Friday, August 30, at 5:00 p.m.
