Four Spartans In Double-Figure Kills At William & Mary

Williamsburg, Va.--In the team's first match of 2013, four San José State volleyball players recorded 10 or more kills, but the Spartans fell to host William & Mary 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 27-25, 25-23) Friday night at the Tribe Invitational.

Making her debut in a Spartan uniform, Lauren Jacobsen started on the left side and led all the Spartan hitters with 19 kills. She hit .311 in the match with 45 attempts and five errors. She added nine digs and a block.

"Lauren works hard in the gym, and she is just starting to show us her talent," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "She had a great night in her first match and will get better as she matures."

Three others had 10 or more kills in the match. Hanah Blume recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 22 digs. Sarah Griest had 10 kills and added a team-best five blocks. Mary Alice O'Reilly had 10 kills as she hit .333 for the match.

"All three of them did a nice job for us offensively tonight," said Crespo.

Defensively, Kiely Pieper recorded a career-best 27 digs and added three aces. Cori O'Donoghue made her Spartan debut with seven digs and an assist. Tyanna Roy, also making her first appearance for San Jose State, had 10 digs and added seven kills and an ace. Michaela Leonard had seven digs to go with 51 assists and an ace.

After falling in the first set 25-17, the Spartans rebounded in the second set with a 25-16 win. The Tribe had a 13-11 lead before San Jose State scored 11 consecutive points to take a 22-13 advantage. "We served tough, passed well and hit smart in the second set. We hit .303 for the set and were able to get into a better offensive flow than we did in the first set," said Crespo.

San Jose State plays two matches on Saturday at the Tribe Invitational. The team faces Northern Arizona at 12 p.m. EDT/9 a.m. PDT and Campbell at 5 p.m. EDT/2 p.m. PDT.
