Williamsburg, Va.-- Hanah Blume became just the fourth player in school history to record 35 digs in a match as San José State lost a hard-fought match to Campbell, 3-2 (25-18, 22-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-12), at the Tribe Invitational Saturday. The Spartans fell to Northern Arizona, 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-14), earlier Saturday.
Blume's 35 digs is just the fourth time in school history that a player has dug that many balls in a match and is the sixth-highest number of digs in a match in school history. The last Spartan player to record 30 or more digs in a match was Courtney Zellmer who had 35 against Gonzaga on August 28, 2010.
For her efforts, Blume was named to the Tribe Invitational All-Tournament team. Against Campbell, she recorded her second double-double of the weekend with 13 kills to go with 35 digs and added four block assists.
"Hanah had a very nice match digging the ball for us tonight," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "We did a nice job of ball handling in this match by everyone, and that helps put us in a good position to attack the ball."
Four others recorded 10+ digs in the match that contributed to the 107 total digs for San José State. Cori O'Donoghue recorded 18 digs, and Kiely Pieper added 13 digs. Michaela Leonard had her first double-double of the season with 18 digs and 51 assists. Lauren Jacobsen had her first career double-double with 12 digs and a team-best 17 kills.
Four Spartans had 10+ kills in the match - Jacobsen at 17, Blume and Sarah Griest each with 13 and Mary Alice O'Reilly with 11. O'Reilly added a team-best six blocks (1 solo, 5 assists), while Griest had three block assists.
After falling in the first set 25-18, the Spartans rallied to win the next two sets, 25-22 and 25-22. In the fourth set, the team had a 24-23 lead, but Campbell scored the next three points to win 26-24. The fifth set also saw San José State with an 11-10 lead, but the Camels scored five of the next six points to win the set 15-12 and take the match.
"We played a lot better than we did this morning," said Crespo. "We played with more drive and emotion against Campbell. It was a well-played match that got away from us.
"We need to learn how to close out sets and matches and need to be stronger mentally at the end. We could not put the ball away."
In the first match of the day, the Spartans were swept by Northern Arizona, 25-20, 25-19, 25-14. Blume led the team with eight kills and added 10 digs, while Pieper had a team-best 13 digs.
"We did not give ourselves a chance to be in this match," said Crespo. "We needed to be engaged better and learn how to bounce back quicker. We are still learning how to deal with all of the emotions of a match. "
The Spartans now return to the state of California for the entire month of September. The team plays at the Sacramento State Invitational on September 6 (Sacramento State) and 7 (Cal Poly and Central Connecticut.)
