Berkeley, Calif. - A three-goal second half by the California Golden Bears doomed the San Jose State University women's soccer team as they lost, 3-0, at California on Sunday, Sept. 1.

The Spartans (0-4) and Golden Bears (3-0-1) were evenly-matched in the first 45 minutes. San Jose State took four shots in the first half, sending one towards the pipes.

Goalkeeper Sarah Peplinski was a major reason the game was scoreless going in to halftime. At the 21-minute mark, a Golden Bear rocketed the ball towards Peplinski's net, forcing the freshman to dive towards the goal's top-left corner and snatch the ball.

In the second half, the Golden Bears' defense shut down the Spartans, and it paid off for California. Ifeola Onumonu put the Golden Bears on the board in the 56th minute. Less than five minutes later, she served the ball to Samantha Witteman for California's 2-0 lead. Onumonu added a second goal at 82:09 for the 3-0 score.

California outshot the Spartans, 14-to-5. Freshman Carley McBeath led San Jose State with two shots.

Peplinski made two saves, as compared to California goalkeeper Emily Kruger's one save.

The Spartans travel down to San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Friday, Sept. 6, to take on Cal Poly at 7:00 p.m.
