Stockton, Calif.--The San José State volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at the Bankers Classic, defeating UC Riverside 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-23) but falling to host Pacific 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) at the Spanos Center.
The Spartans finished second at a tournament for the second consecutive week (Sacramento State Invitational last week.) Two Spartans were named to the all-tournament team - Hanah Blume and Mary Alice O'Reilly.
In the morning match, the Spartans battled with UC Riverside for all three sets. Blocking carried the team in the first set as the team recorded seven blocks and out-blocked the Highlanders 11-3 for the match. O'Reilly led the team as she tied her career high with nine blocks (1 solo, 8 assists) while Michaela Leonard added five block assists.
Blume led the Spartans with 10 kills and added eight digs. O'Reilly had nine kills, followed by Sarah Griest and Lauren Jacobsen who each had eight. Kiely Pieper led the team with 14 digs, while Cori O'Donoghue added 11 digs.
Against Pacific, Blume again led the team with 11 kills and recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a team-high 13 digs. O'Reilly hit .353 in the match with seven kills and added a team-high five blocks.
"Today I was impressed with our strong attitude and intense focus against UC Riverside," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "We blocked well all day. I was happy with our focus in the first two sets against Pacific, I just wish we could have sustained that drive throughout the match.
"Overall, we finished second for the second straight tournament and now we will get ready for Mountain West play."
San José State now takes the week off before beginning play in the school's inaugural year in the Mountain West. The Spartans will play the first conference contest in school history when the team hosts Boise State on Thursday, September 26, at The Event Center.
