San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State University women's soccer team recorded a season-high number of shots-on-goal but dropped its first home match of the season, 2-0, to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Sunday, September 15.
Putting a 2013-best six shots between the pipes, the Spartans out-shot the Gauchos, 13-to-6, marking the second-straight match that San Jose State took more shots than its opponent. The Spartans' best chance of the match came in the 13th minute. Alexis Venegas fed the ball to Rodriguez, who released a shot that ricocheted off of Beth Ritter`s far side post.
The Gauchos (5-2-1) responded to the Spartans' highlight-reel opportunity with its first goal of the match, at the 17:51 minute mark. Dakota Griggs passed the ball to Angelisa Cortez, who released a low shot past Zoe Makrigiannis' far post for the 1-0 lead.
UC Santa Barbara tacked on another goal 20 minutes into the second half. Indiana Mead scored from the top of the box in front of Makrigiannis' nearside post for the 2-0 score.
At 79:08, Sarah Fraser was awarded a penalty kick for San Jose State, but the Gauchos maintained their 2-0 lead when Fraser's shot careened off of the nearside post.
Makrigiannis made two saves and Ritter recorded six saves.
San Jose State returns to Spartan Stadium on Friday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m. when they host Pacific.
