Sept. 17, 2013
Ann Arbor, Mich. - Cody Blick entered the final round of the 2013 Wolverine Intercollegiate with a four-stroke lead, shot an even-par 71 and earned his second tournament title of the year on Tuesday.
Blick, a sophomore from Danville, Calif., played in the final group of the day. Teeing off on the backside, he carded seven straight pars before a bogey on the 17th, his eight hole of the day. He then strung together seven more pars before getting the stroke back with a birdie on the par-four seventh, his 16th.
Pars on his last two holes got him to the clubhouse with a 71 and 54-hole total of 203 (-10). He was three shots clear of Michigan's Chris O'Neill, who had the best round of the day with a five-under par 66.
"Yesterday I was stuffing it on my approach shots, was patient with my putter and shot two good scores," said Blick, the first Spartans to win back-to-back tournament titles since Arron Oberholser did it in the 1995-96 season. "For some reason I was a little nervous today, but I had a solid day and really played the golf course."
"The (win last week and this week) shows me that I can compete on this level," said Blick. "I worked really hard over the summer and the results are showing."
Landon Polterock posted the best round of the day for San José State, a one-under 70. He had four birdies, including three on his inward nine, which offset a bogey and double bogey. Polterock finished in a tie for 28th with a 220 (+7) total.
Justin Estrada shot a 54-hole total of 222 (+9) and finished tied for 37th place. He had a 72 on Tuesday, his best round of the event. After going out in one-over, he double bogeyed the second hole, but came back with birdies on the 4th and 6th, his 13th and 15th of the day, for a one-under par round.
Also shooting his best round of the tournament, Taylor Bromley carded a two-over 73 in the final 18 holes. He had a couple of birdies on his opening nine holes, but made the turn at two-over. With a birdie and bogey on the inward nine, he finished the tournament at 228 (+15) in a tie for 50th place.
Daniel Semmler had a birdie on each side and carded a 76 (+5) on Tuesday. His tournament total was 234 (+21) and he finished tied for 54th place.
As a team, the Spartans moved up one spot in the final round finishing in seventh place at 870 (+18), 19 shots behind champion Michigan State 851 (-1).
