San Jose, Calif.--Strong serving helped the San Jose State volleyball team set two Event Center records Thursday night, but the Spartans could not finish the fifth set as the team fell to Boise State 3-2 (25-20, 25-20, 16-25, 22-25, 15-12) in the first-ever Mountain West match in school history.
Kiely Pieper broke the Event Center record for most service aces by a San Jose State player with seven in the match. The old record of five aces was set by four different players including current Spartan Lauren Jacobsen who had five in the win over Eastern Washington two weeks ago.
The Spartans set the team record for aces in a match with 13, seven by Pieper, two by Hanah Blume and Michaela Leonard and one by Sarah Griest and Jacobsen. The old record of 12 was set three times, the last time, ironically against Boise State in September of 2001.
After losing the first two set by identical 25-20 scores, the Spartans came out in set three and battled with Boise State before scoring five consecutive points to take a 14-10 lead. Pieper had three of her seven aces in the set. Mary Alice O'Reilly and Leonard closed out the set with a block to give San Jose State the 25-16 win.
The fourth set found both teams battling back and forth with three lead changes and 10 ties. The Spartans took the lead for good at 10-9 on a Leonard service ace. Lauren Jacobsen closed out the set with a kill to give San Jose State the 25-22 win.
In the fifth set, the Spartans had an 11-8 lead before three Boise State kills and a Bronco ace tied the set at 11-11. The Broncos then took the lead at 13-12 and won the set 15-12 to take the match.
Four Spartans were in double-figure kills, led by O'Reilly with a career-high 18. She also led the Spartans with six blocks, one solo and five assists. Blume recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs. Griest had 12 kills and four blocks, while Jacobsen added 12 kills and six digs.
Leonard had 54 assists, five digs and three blocks, one solo and two assists. Pieper led the team with 18 digs, while Tyanna Roy added 13 digs, seven kills and four block assists.
