Albuquerque, N.M. - In the first Mountain West match in program history, the San Jose State University women's soccer team fell in overtime, 2-1, to the University of New Mexico Lobos on Friday, September 27.
"The team played smart in the first half and we executed our game plan well," said Head Coach Jeff Leightman. "But in the end, we got unlucky."
Senior Sarah Fraser put the Spartans (1-8-0, 0-1-0 MW) on the scoreboard first in the 12th minute. Fraser's first goal since her freshman season gave San Jose State a 1-0 lead.
The Lobos (3-7-1, 1-0-0 MW) tied the match at the 58:56. Annie Wheeler got the 1-1 equalizer when she knocked in a loose ball from 10 yards in front of Zoe Makrigiannis' net.
But just over four-and-a-half minutes into the first overtime, New Mexico's Lindsey Guice scored for the 2-1 win.
"I'm proud of our effort," Leightman said, "but we need to score more goals and stop letting in multiple goals each game."
Makrigiannis and Lobo Cassie Ulrich each made four saves.
New Mexico outshot the Spartans, 18-7, but only held a 6-5 shots-on-goal advantage.
