San Diego, Calif. - The San Jose State University women's soccer team made 12 saves, its highest amount since 2011, but lost a Mountain West match, 2-0, to the Aztecs at San Diego State University on Sunday, September 29.
"We invested a lot in to Friday's match (a 2-1 overtime loss at New Mexico) and were very tired against a very good opponent," said Head Coach Jeff Leightman. "San Diego State was able to punish us for our mistakes."
The Aztecs (4-5-2, 2-0 MW) took a 1-0 lead at the 11-minute mark, thanks to the Mountain West's leading scorer, Hannah Keane. Keane, who took nine shots in the match, netted her seventh goal of the season from six yards out.
In the 59th minute, the Spartans' (1-9-0, 0-2 MW) starting goalkeeper Zoe Makrigiannis was issued a red card. "We came out in the second half playing better," said Leightman. "But that red card changed the momentum." Freshman Sarah Peplinski took over goalkeeping duties, facing the resulting penalty kick. Victoria Barba's shot sailed past Peplinski for the final 2-0 score.
The Spartans took just three shots, its lowest amount this season, with Kareli Rodriguez taking two of the team's shots.
Makrigiannis and Peplinski combined to make 12 saves, the most since a September 9, 2011, 4-2 loss at CSU Bakersfield.
San Jose State hosts its first Mountain West weekend on Friday, October 4 with a 7:00 p.m. match against UNLV. Nevada then visits on Sunday, October 6 at 1:00 p.m.
