San Jose, Calif.--The San Jose State volleyball team came back from an 0-2 deficit behind the hitting of Hanah Blume and Lauren Jacobsen as the Spartans defeated Nevada 3-2 (18-25, 26-28, 25-17, 25-20, 15-7) Thursday night in volleyball's first Mountain West victory in school history.
Blume led all hitters on the night with 25 kills and hit .309 for the night with 55 attempts and just eight errors. She had her ninth double-double of the season with 13 digs and added three block assists.
Jacobsen recorded her second double-double of the season with a season-best 20 kills and 17 digs. She hit .304 on the night with 46 attempts and just six errors. Jacobsen also had three blocks, one solo and two assists.
The Spartans never led in the first set, falling 25-18 to Nevada. In the second set, the two teams battled through three set points before Nevada prevailed on the fourth set point to win 28-26.
After the break, San Jose State took control of the third set, never relinquishing the lead and won 25-17. The team hit .448 in the set with 16 kills on 29 attempts and only three errors. The fourth set found the two teams going back and forth before the Spartans took the lead for good on a Jacobsen kill at 19-18. San Jose State won the set 25-20 to force a fifth and deciding set.
In the fifth set, San Jose State took control from the first serve and never gave up the lead. Sarah Griest served five consecutive points to help the Spartans pull away for the 15-7 win and the match victory.
Other contributing to the win included Mary Alice O'Reilly who hit .600 with 14 kills on 20 attempts and just two errors. Griest had six kills, five block assists and two aces. Michaela Leonard had 66 assists, nine digs and two blocks (one solo, one assist). Kiely Pieper and Cori O'Donoghue each had 10 digs. Tyanna Roy had three kills, three digs and two blocks.
San Jose State next plays at Fresno State Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by a non-conference match at CSU Bakersfield Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m.
