Oct. 19, 2013

Freshmen Clara Espar and Cara Robinson combined for nine goals as San Jose State University topped a team of alumnae all-stars, 16-8, in the Spartans' annual Alumni match.

Espar, who played for Spain in the 10th FINA World Junior Championships in August, poured in six goals. Robinson, who played for Canada in the same championship, found the cage three times for 2014 Spartans.

"Our team had solid team defense and performed exceptionally well on offense," said associate head coach Johnny Bega.

Victoria Smith was the Spartans' third multi-goal scorer with two. Rachel Henry, Bianca Seyfert, Kelli Leabo, Alisa Argend and Brittany Krappe each scored a goal for San Jose State.

Returning starter Maddie Reardon was credited with eight saves in two quarters of action in goal. Playing one quarter each, Katie Lind was credited with a save and freshman Sara Northam stopped five shots including a 5-meter penalty attempt.

Ally Waasted was the Alumni's top goal scorer with a three-goal hat trick. Juliet Moss, Tanya Torres, Laura Scott, Allie Stewart, Kelly Pearce and Deanna Lowery were some of the Alumni's field players. Career saves leader Meagan Minson was in goal for the Alumni.

The Spartans will scrimmage with Stanford on November 11 to conclude their Fall semester competitions. San Jose State begins regular-season play, Saturday, January 11, at the University of California tournament.
