Stanford, Calif. ---- The San José State University women's tennis team had a strong first day at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, as three Spartans advanced to the round of 32 in singles and two doubles teams moved on to the round of 32.
The doubles teams of Julianna Bacelar and Sabastiani Leon Chao and Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey advanced to the round of 32 based on byes in the championship draw.
In singles, Leon Chao, Bacelar, and Klocker each won their first two matches and moved on to the round of 32.
Leon Chao defeated Sophia Bott of Washington in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 in the round of 128 and Pacific's Cristina Saenz de Buruaga 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 64.
Bacelar continued to the round of 64 after a withdrawal from competitor Francis Dean of Pacific and won her round of 64 match against Sophie Lohscheidt of Sacramento State, 6-4, 6-4.
Klocker was the last Spartan to make it to the round of 32 after she defeated California's Alice Duranteau 6-0, 6-4, and Jasmine Minor of Oregon in straight sets, 6-2; 6-3, in the round of 64.
The Spartans continue play Saturday, October 19, at 9:00 a.m. (PT).
