Stanford, Calif. ---- For the first time in school history, a San José State University women's tennis entry advanced to the semifinal round of an ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted by Stanford University.
The doubles team of Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey, both freshmen, defeated the #1 seeded and #11 nationally-ranked California duo of Lynn Chi and Anett Schutting, 8-4, in the open doubles draw.
The Spartan duo then returned in the quarterfinal round, topping Caroline Doyle and Krista Hardebeck of Stanford, 8-4, and becoming the first doubles team in San José State history to move to the semifinals.
"I would say that all of their hard work has paid off," says head coach Sylvain Malroux about the duo's performance. "Being able to beat Cal and Stanford back to back is an amazing performance from these two freshmen. They are making school history for the Spartans!"
Klocker and Rey will play the Stanford team of Taylor Davidson and Ellen Tsay, the tournament's fourth seed and #39 in the ITA rankings, on Monday, October 21. The match begins at 11:00 a.m. (PT) at the Taube Tennis Center.
In Sunday's consolation singles, three Spartans won their tournament matches.
Julianna Bacelar was first to win in the consolation singles round after she topped Emily McColl of Sacramento State, 6-0; 6-0.
Jessica Willett defeated Portland's Emily Gould, 6-2; 6-4, and Sabastiani Leon Chao won 6-4; 6-1 against Sacramento State's Jennifer Nguyen.
In consolation doubles, Bacelar and Leon Chao paired up to defeat Sophie and Anneka Watts of Fresno State, 8-2.
"The entire team is doing wonderful and if we keep up the hard work, we will have a really bright future," concludes Malroux.
