Oct. 21, 2013

Stanford, Calif. --- The San José State University's women's tennis doubles team of Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey became the first team in San José State history to make it to the semifinal round at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.

The freshmen duo advanced to the semifinal round after defeating the #1 seeded doubles team of Lynn Chi and Anett Schutting of California, 8-4, in the round of 16 on October 20.

In the semifinal round, the Spartans went up against Stanford's #4 seeded duo of Taylor Davidson and and Ellen Tsay, but the duo fell short to the Cardinals, 8-3.

"Taking two freshmen and putting them together and having them make it to the semifinal round of the toughest competition is amazing," said head coach Sylvain Malroux. "Being able to beat California, a number-1 seeded team, Stanford and some other good teams is the beginning of something special."

Over the four-day competition, the Spartans had a total of 18 wins, making it the most wins at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships in San José State history.

"I can tell that this tournament this weekend was better than our first. We had a good showing at the Cal NIKE Tournament, but this weekend was a great showing and shows improvement from our team. It is exciting and we are getting a lot of confidence for the upcoming season," concluded Malroux.

San José State return to competition on November 8 as the Spartans host the San José State Invitational.
