San Jose, Calif. - The San José State women's basketball team had five players score in double figures and surpassed the 100-point barrier in a 104-76 exhibition win over the Warriors of William Jessup on Tuesday evening in The Event Center.
Rebecca Woodberry led the Spartans with 23 points on 8-for-13 shooting including going 4-for-7 from 3-point range. Ta'Rea Cunnigan had 19 points and six assists while Jasmine Smith grabbed 19 rebounds and scored 18 points. Classye James had 13 points and Britta Hall added 10 points.
The Spartans, under new head coach Jamie Craighead, traded baskets with the Warriors for the first six minutes. With the score 10-10 and 13:39 to go in the half, the San José State went on a 11-0 run, in just over two minutes, to take its first double digit lead, 21-10.
The Warriors fought their way back in to the game using the 3-point shot. They hit four treys in over the next five minutes to cut the lead to 32-28. The surge was led by Ashley Rose who sank two of her game-high six threes on her way to 32 points. San José State closed the half on a 12-to-1 run to take a 47-29 lead in the locker room.
In the second half, William Jessup cut the lead to 11 points, 52-41 on a three from Rose with 16:03 to play, but got no closer and the Spartans went on to a 28-point win.
For the game, the Spartans shot 47 percent from the field (40-for-85) to William Jessups' 36.5 percent (27-for-74). They outrebounded the Warriors 58-to-39 and had a 16-to-10 lead in steals.
The Spartans open the 2013-14 regular season on Friday November 8, against the San Francisco State Gators. Tipoff, in The Event Center, is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
