San José, Calif. - Despite generating a bevy of scoring chances, the San Jose State University women's soccer team lost to the Nevada Wolf Pack, 2-1, in a Mountain West match on Sunday, October 6.
The Spartans (2-10-0, 1-3 MW) outshot Nevada, 13-6, tying its largest shot advantage of the season.
However, the Wolf Pack (4-6-3, 2-2 MW) scored their game-winning goal in the 35th minute. After Mackenzie Henke's shot ricocheted off of starting goalkeeper Sarah Peplinski's farside post, Erin Saxton collected the rebound and deposited it into Peplinski's net for the 2-1 lead.
A giveaway by Nevada led to the Spartans' first goal of the match. After a Nevada pass bounced to Kareli Rodriguez, the junior broke away and sliced a shot past goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos. Rodriguez's second goal of the season gave San Jose State the 1-0 lead.
Nevada got the 1-1 equalizer almost three minutes later. Bobby Reilly lobbied a shot to Peplinski that bounced awkwardly and dribbled behind her to tie the match, 1-1.
Peplinski (1-6-0) suffered the loss for the Spartans, making one save in 45 minutes played. Zoe Makrigiannis made one save in her 45 minutes in net. Nevada goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos' record improved to 4-6-3, after making eight saves.
Megan Molina and Lupita Estrada led San Jose State with three shots each.
San Jose State hits the road on Friday, October 11, for a 1:30 p.m. (MDT) Mountain West match at Boise State. The Spartans then host former Western Athletic Conference foe Utah State on Sunday, October 13, at 12:00 p.m. (PDT).
