Women's Golf In Fourth Place After Shooting Season-Best 596

Oct. 8, 2013

Sammamish, Wash. - The San José State University women's golf team shot a season-best 596 for a fourth place start in the opening two rounds of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, hosted by Washington. The Spartans' 296 in the second round at the 6,039-yard, par-72 Sahalee Country Club was also a season-best.

"As a team, we had our best performance to date this year," said Head Coach John Dormann. "We had a really good week at practice leading up to this week and that showed in our play and performance today."

My Leander led the Spartans, finishing the day two-over par, 146 and is in sixth place overall. She shot back-to-back one-over par 73s, recording a total of eight birdies, including five on her opening nine holes of the day.

"She made a lot of long putts that was the key to her game," Dormann said of Leander. "She has such a great attitude on the course. She's able to overcome a bad hole or two and that's important on this course. It's a tough course that demands accuracy off the tee."

Alexandra Kristofersson went out in even par in her opening round and came home with a two-over 38. On her second 18, she bogeyed her first hole but got it back with a birdie on her second hole, then finished the nine with back-to-back birdies for a two-under par 34. She finished the back nine three over for a one-over 73. Kristofersson, who had six birdies on the day, carded a 147 on the day for seventh-place tie.

Megan Osland shot one-under on her first nine holes of the day, but struggled on her back nine, for a first-round score of three-over par 75. She fared better on her second 18 holes, with two birdies and finished at one over 73. Through 36 holes, Osland sits at 148 (+4) and is in an eleventh-place tie.

Kathleen Rojas finished the day 11-over par 155. She recorded five birdies on the day, four of which came in her second round.

Rachelle Reali shot an 81 in the opening round and a 79 in the second round for a 16-over par 160.

#11-Stanford leads the tournament by 21 strokes at seven-under, 569. #1-Washington and #28-Oregon are tied for second, shooting 14-over par.

Individually, Mariko Tumangan of Stanford is the individual leader, shooting a 137 (-7) on the day. Teammate Mariah Stackhouse is in second place, one shot back.

The day's final three groups (California, Colorado and Gonzaga) did not finish their rounds due to darkness. Following the completion of the second round tomorrow, the Spartans will tee off from the 10th hole at approximately 9:00 a.m. (PDT).
