San Jose, Calif. - A last-minute goal by the Fresno State Bulldogs spoiled Senior Night for the San Jose State University women's soccer team, a 1-0 Mountain West loss in the Spartans' final match of 2013 on Friday, November 1.
With 58 seconds left in regulation, Bulldog Jaycee Bingham sent the ball from the far side five-yard line to Shonice Myers, sitting at Zoe Makrigiannis' farside post. Her quick shot sailed past Makrigiannis for the final 1-0 score.
Makrigiannis made several big stops for the Spartans (3-13-1, 2-6-1 MW). In the 59th minute, Makrigiannis (2-8-1) made a diving save on Lauren Lindstrom after Bingham took a corner kick that sailed to Lindstrom at the farside post. Makrigiannis finished the match with three saves.
For Fresno State (10-7-2, 7-2-1 MW), Katie Devault (8-6-1) tallied two saves.
The Bulldogs outshot San Jose State by an 11-7 margin. Lupita Estrada led the Spartans with two shots.
San Jose State sent out its six seniors in their final match of the season: Gladis Covarrubias, Sarah Fraser, Amanda Heins, Cheryl Kute, McColl Matthews and Megan Molina. The Spartans did not qualify for the Mountain West Women's Soccer Championship, finishing the 2013 season with a 2-7-1 conference record.
