Colorado Springs, Colo., -- The San José State women's cross country team scored 297 points and finished in 10th place at the Mountain West (MW) Championship in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday.
Led by Aylin Mejia, the Spartans finished ahead of UNLV in the team standings. The Lobos of New Mexico took the championship for the fifth consecutive year with a team score of 31.
Mejia clocked a 23:47.12 on the 6K Eisenhower Blue course for a 54th place finish. Teammate Marissa Buckley was close behind in 61st place with a time of 24:07.76.
Rebecca Garcia, with a time of 24:43.41, and Lalida Maokhamphiou with a time of 24:49.12 finished in 74th and 75th place respectively for San José State. Senior Alexandra Seda rounded out the scorers for SJSU with a 77th place finish and a time of 25:05.55
"Today we took the first step in a new era of San José State cross country," said distance coach Brad Wick. "Marissa Buckley had a breakthrough race, and I thought Aylin had a solid meet as well."
Nina Sassano (25:22.11, 78th) and Karina Nunes (26:19.02, 84th) also competed for the Spartans.
New Mexico and Boise State each had two individuals in the top-five on Friday. Emma Bates for Boise State finished in 20:48.15 garnering first place. Bates, a junior, earned MW Women's Student-Athlete of the Year honors. New Mexico head coach Joe Franklin earned the MW Women's Coach of the Year award.
