DeKalb, Ill.--Rashad Muhammad and Dylan Alexander each scored in double figures, but an eight minute scoring drought over the first and second halves contributed to the San Jose State men's basketball 79-66 loss to James Madison Sunday at the NIU Invitational.
Muhammad led the Spartans in scoring again with 18 points and had two steals in 35 minutes of action. Alexander was 5-for-9 from the field as he scored 12 points, grabbed two rebounds, dished out two assists and had two steals.
The Spartans trailed just 32-38 after Jalen James made two free throws with 5:12 remaining in the first half. The Dukes outscored the Spartans 9-0 to end the half and take a 41-28 lead into the locker room.
After the break, San Jose State continued to struggle as they missed their first four shots of the second half. Jaleel Williams hit a three-pointer at the 16:52 mark to end the Spartan drought and pull the team within 11 at 43-31.
For the game, San Jose State made just 21 of their 62 shots from the field and just 10 of 40 from beyond the three-point arc. The team did shoot 82.4 percent from the line (14-17).
Four Dukes scored in double figures, led by Taylor Bessick with 19 points as he was 8-for-10 from the field.
San Jose State continues on the road with a non-conference game Wednesday evening at Pepperdine. Tip off is set for 7 p.m., and can be heard on KSJS 90.5 FM and www.ksjs.org.
