Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. - Rebecca Woodberry scored a season-high 29 points, including five of the Spartans' record-tying 13 3-pointers as the San José State women's basketball team defeated the San Francisco Dons 98-79 on Wednesday night in The Event Center.

San José State (4-1) hit 13-of-36 from behind the arc, which broke The Event Center record for makes and attempts by the women's team. The previous records were 12 made and 31 attempted in a game against Hawai'i in the 2003-04 season. In addition, the 13 threes equaled the program's all-time record, which was set in the 1993-94 season against Long Beach State. The 36 total 3-point attempts is now the all-time record.

In the first half, San José State played its best 20 minutes of basketball this season. They controlled the pace of play on both ends of the court. Offensively, they hit 40 percent from the floor (16-for-40) and 9-for-23 (39 percent) from 3-point range. In the first seven minutes, the Spartans knocked down four treys and had a 19-14 lead. That's when the defense kicked in.

The Dons (1-3) would not score for the next six and a half minutes, while San Jose State pushed its advantage to 18 points, 32-14. The Spartans forced USF into 10 turnovers, which they turned into 12 points while only giving the ball away three times before the half. Their defensive pressure held San Francisco to just 29 percent shooting (12-for-41), including 1-for-8 from 3-point range and by half time the score was 50-30 SJSU.

In the second half, the Spartans took their biggest lead of the game 61-36 on a pair of Classye James free throws with 15:09 to play and it looked like the San José State was on its way to a comfortable win. But USF would not go quietly.

They mounted a comeback over the next seven minutes, trimming the Spartans lead to 10 points, 75-65 with 8:03 left. Woodberry and Ta'Rea Cunnigan ended comeback by going on a 10-3 scoring spurt to put the game away. Woodberry had a layup and 3-pointer in the run and Cunnigan hit a pair of free throws and had a 3-point play. Leading 85-68 with 4:38 to play, they cruised to the 19-point win.

In addition to Woodberry, Rachol West had a career-best 11 points hitting three 3-pointers. Jasmine Smith had her third double double in five games with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Cunnigan added 28 points.

Britta Hall had eight points and dished out eight assists, while only turning the ball over once. San José State's 12 total turnovers were the fewest of the season.

The Spartans are 4-1 to start the season for the only the fourth time in program history and the first time since 2003-04.

San José State returns to The Event Center court on Saturday, November 23 at 3:00 p.m. against the University of San Diego Toreros.
