Second-Half Surge Not Enough For Men's Basketball

Ogden, Utah--The San José State men's basketball team shot just 32 percent from the field for the game despite three players scoring in double figures as the Spartans fell at Weber State 72-55 Saturday night at the Dee Events Center.

Making his first start of the season, Rashad Muhammad led San José State (2-6) with 17 points as he was 4-for-8 from three-point range and 3-for-3 from the line.

Two others scored in double figures for the Spartans. Jaleel Williams scored 14 points as he was just 5-for-19 from the field. He added eight rebounds in 31 minutes of action. Chris Cunningham recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds. D.J. Brown dished out a team-best six assists and scored eight points for the Spartans.

Down eight at halftime, the Spartans made another strong second half start, outscoring the Wildcats 23-12 over the first 10 minutes. San José State took a 45-42 lead as Muhammad made four-point play and a three-pointer.

However, the Spartans went cold over the next five minutes, and Weber State used a 16-0 run to re-establish a 58-45 lead. The Wildcats shot just 57.6 percent from the free throw line (19-33) to keep San José State in the game.

Weber State's Davion Berry led all scorers with 20 points, and Richaud Gittens added 10 points for the Wildcats who improved to 1-3 on the year.

San José State plays its final road game of 2013 next Saturday, December 7, at Houston. The game begins at 5 p.m. CST, and can be seen on ESPN 3. The Spartans next home game is against UC Davis, Wednesday, December 18, at 7 p.m.
